We all travel for the thrills—the first glimpse of the Ngorongoro Crater or the magic of a Tanzanian sunrise. But as a travel specialist, my job is to make sure the only surprises you encounter are the “stunning” ones!
Whether you’re heading to the plains of Africa or the streets of Paris, these are the three non-negotiables I recommend to every single one of my clients.
1. The STEP Program: Your Direct Line to Safety
If there is one thing I insist on, it’s signing up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
This is a free service provided by the U.S. Department of State that “enrolls” your trip with the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
- Why it matters: If there’s a natural disaster, civil unrest, or even a family emergency back home, the Embassy knows you are there and can reach you immediately.
- The Perk: You get real-time safety and weather updates for your specific destination sent straight to your phone.
2. The “Paper Trail” (Yes, Even in a Digital World!)
We live on our phones, but if your phone is lost, stolen, or dies, you need a backup. I always tell my clients to make physical copies of the front and back of their credit cards and their passport photo and signature page.
- The Strategy: Keep one set of copies in your carry-on (separate from your actual wallet) and leave another set with a trusted friend at home.
- The “Why”: If you ever have to visit an embassy for a lost passport, having those copies makes the replacement process significantly faster. It’s the difference between a 2-hour delay and a 2-day nightmare.
3. Trip Insurance: Don’t Leave Home Without It
Think of trip insurance as your “adventure umbrella.” You hope you don’t need it, but you’ll be so glad you have it when it pours.
Modern travel insurance covers so much more than just a cancelled flight. It includes:
- Medical Emergencies: Many domestic health plans don’t cover you abroad.
- Medical Evacuation: Essential for remote destinations like safari camps.
- Lost Luggage & Delays: So you aren’t out of pocket for a new wardrobe if the airline misplaces your bags.
Travel is about freedom, and nothing gives you more freedom than knowing you are prepared for the “what ifs.”
